Our son, Cole, was diagnosed with Dystonia when he was 6 years old. At first, it started as just his left foot dropping when he ran and occasionally tripping him. After dealing with it for 4 years, he is now in a wheelchair for most of the day. He has always been full of life and excitement, and this disability is taking that from him. We are watching Dystonia take over his life and leaving him barely able to get himself dressed. We already know that without surgery he will eventually be in a wheelchair fulltime. His Dystonia continues to progress and take over his body.

The helplessness you feel as a parent, not being able to help or fix your child, is heart wrenching. Cole’s back is curving so bad now because of Dystonia that he is starting to develop back and cervical issues, and he is in constant pain in his arms, hands and legs. He has trouble with the most simple of things like writing and dressing himself.

The procedure he needs is called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). This procedure has the potential of fixing him or greatly improving his disability. This procedure is not done in Montana.

Cole has tried all medications known to help with Dystonia and none of them benefits him. He has finally been approved to go to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
