MAKING FIRE SAFETY A PRIORITY

American Red Cross®
American Red Cross Fire Safety

Did you know that seven times a day, someone in the United States dies in a home fire? In fact, more people die in home fires each year than in many major natural disasters. With the help and support of Astellas USA Foundation, the American Red Cross® is canvasing neighborhoods - particularly communities most at risk for a fire - installing smoke detectors and educating about fire prevention. Home fires don’t impact everyone equally. Low-income, elderly, disabled and youth populations are all more likely to be severely affected by a fire in their home than the general population. Special emphasis is placed on these populations most vulnerable to home fires.

This effort is part of a nationwide American Red Cross® campaign to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent by 2020.

Continuing its eight-year support of the American Red Cross®, in 2016 - 2018, Astellas USA Foundation has donated funds to help purchase more than 53,000 smoke alarms, helping around 21,000 families be more prepared for fires.

Since the campaign's inception in October 2014, the American Red Cross® has installed more than 1,000,000 smoke alarms. And, the American Red Cross® has documented 285 lives saved, thanks to these efforts.
